Our Handy AC Troubleshooting Checklist

person-holding-a-checklist-and-pencil

When something goes wrong with your air conditioner, especially if it happens during a heat wave—which is when the AC is most likely to struggle—you want it fixed right away. Having to wait for a technician when your AC stops working can be miserable! But it’s even worse if, when the technician comes to take a look, they discover that nothing was really wrong after all.

If you can get to the bottom of an air conditioning problem yourself, wouldn’t it be best to do that? It could be quick and easy, and you could have your AC working again in minutes. Of course, actual HVAC maintenance and repair needs to be done by a pro. But you can follow this AC troubleshooting checklist, and you might be able to resolve some basic issues—no repairs needed. Here’s what to do.

Make Sure the AC Is Getting Power

Sometimes, what seems like a truly terrible issue or completely broken-down air conditioner is, in fact, nothing more than a tripped circuit breaker. Take a little trip to your electrical panel. Are any switches out of line? If so, flip it back into place, and try the AC again. Did it work? Fantastic! It may simply have been that another appliance got plugged into the same circuit and together, they drew too much power at once.

If this works, but the same issue happens again in the near future, when you’re not vacuuming on the same circuit as the air conditioner, it may be that you do have an actual problem. Electrical issues in the AC can cause it to call for too much power, so if this is a recurring situation, you’ll need AC repair in Milton, WI.

Make Sure the Thermostat Is Set Properly

It’s very easy to accidentally change your thermostat settings, and it can be embarrassing to be told by an HVAC technician that your only AC problem was that your elbow bumped your thermostat from “cool” to “heat” or “off.” Settings for when you’re away from home can also be accidentally activated, changing the target temperature to save energy.

Make sure things are set correctly. Or perhaps, when you check your thermostat, you see that the display is dark and it doesn’t appear to be working at all. It may just need new batteries. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, it’s time for repair.

Make Sure the Air Filter Is Clean

A clogged air filter can cause the air conditioner to shut down unexpectedly. This is the limit switch, protecting the system from overheating. The air filter should generally be cleaned monthly, but it can clog faster than that if you’ve got shedding pets, construction in or around your home, or other sources of additional dust.

Remove the filter. Wash and dry it, if it’s a reusable filter. Toss it out and get a clean one, if it’s a disposable filter. Slide it back into position and try turning the system back on. Try to remember to do this very regularly in the future.

If none of these solutions get your air conditioner back up and running properly, you’ll need the help of a qualified technician. But at least you’ll be sure that you’re calling for help you actually need.

You can always count on 24-Hour Home Comfort Services, your heating and cooling specialists.
